Day-by-Day Details
Thursday, May 6- Departure Day
Depart from Columbia, SC on your overnight flight to Japan, ready to embark on a transformative journey through culture, history, and innovation.
Friday, May 7 – Tokyo Arrival
Welcome to Tokyo, one of the world’s most dynamic cities. Upon arrival, meet your HTP Travel Director and transfer to your hotel. After time to rest and refresh, enjoy a welcome dinner at a local restaurant—your first introduction to authentic Japanese cuisine and dining culture.
Saturday, May 8 – Tokyo: Tradition and Modern Life
Begin the morning with a guided visit to Meiji Shrine, a tranquil Shinto sanctuary dedicated to Emperor Meiji and Empress Shōken, surrounded by over 100,000 trees donated from across Japan. Continue to the Imperial Palace, exploring its serene East Gardens, a stunning blend of manicured landscapes and Edo-period history. Next, immerse yourself in the energy of the Tsukiji Outer Market, where local vendors sell everything from sashimi-grade tuna to matcha sweets. Sample Japanese street foods like tamagoyaki (rolled omelet) or grilled seafood skewers. End the day with a group dinner, reflecting on the harmony between Tokyo’s centuries-old traditions and its ultra-modern pace.
Sunday, May 9 – Tokyo: Arts and Icons
Start the day at the Tokyo Skytree, one of the tallest towers in the world, for panoramic views of the sprawling metropolis. Explore Asakusa, Tokyo’s old-town district, home to Senso-ji Temple, the city’s oldest Buddhist temple. Experience the rituals of worship at this sacred site and browse the lively Nakamise shopping street for traditional crafts and local snacks. In the afternoon, visit the Katsushika Hokusai Museum, dedicated to the ukiyo-e master best known for The Great Wave off Kanagawa. Learn about the influence of Japanese woodblock printing on global art and culture.
Monday, May 10 – Tokyo: Community Engagement and Pop Culture
Participate in a community service project—such as a River Sumida cleanup or local environmental initiative—alongside Tokyo residents. This hands-on experience deepens understanding of Japan’s approach to civic responsibility and environmental stewardship. Later, step into the neon world of Akihabara, Tokyo’s mecca for anime, manga, and gaming culture. Explore themed cafés, cutting-edge tech shops, and the youth-driven energy that defines modern Japan.
Tuesday, May 11 – Excursion to Mt. Fuji and Hakone
Travel to Hakone, a scenic region famous for its hot springs and views of Mount Fuji, Japan’s most iconic peak. Ride the Hakone Ropeway over the volcanic Owakudani Valley, where you can see sulfur vents and even try “black eggs” boiled in the mineral-rich waters. Cruise across Lake Ashi, where on clear days Mount Fuji’s reflection glimmers on the surface. Return to Tokyo in the evening for dinner and reflection on Japan’s reverence for nature and balance.
Wednesday, May 12 – Kyoto: Journey on the Shinkansen
Board the world-famous Shinkansen bullet train to Kyoto, Japan’s ancient imperial capital. Upon arrival, explore Gion, Kyoto’s historic geisha district, where traditional teahouses and wooden machiya townhouses line lantern-lit streets. Learn about the geisha’s cultural role and Kyoto’s preservation of artistry and tradition.
Thursday, May 13 – Kyoto: Nijo Castle, Fushimi Inari Shrine, and Arashiyama
Start your day at Nijo Castle, once the residence of the Tokugawa shoguns. Walk through its ornate corridors and experience the “nightingale floors” that chirp underfoot to guard against intruders. Continue to the Fushimi Inari Shrine, dedicated to the Shinto god of prosperity and agriculture. Hike through thousands of vermilion torii gates that wind up Mount Inari—a powerful symbol of perseverance and devotion. Conclude with a visit to the Arashiyama Bamboo Grove, an ethereal forest of towering bamboo. Stroll from Tenryu-ji Temple (a UNESCO World Heritage site) to the Okochi Sanso Villa, surrounded by tranquil gardens and sweeping mountain views.
Friday, May 14 – Hiroshima and Miyajima Island
Take a day trip to Hiroshima, where you’ll visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum, a deeply moving tribute to the city’s tragic history and powerful message of peace. Afterward, travel by ferry to Miyajima Island, home to the UNESCO-listed Itsukushima Shrine and its famous “floating” torii gate, one of Japan’s most photographed landmarks. Return to Kyoto in the evening.
Saturday, May 15 – Nara and Osaka
Travel to Nara, Japan’s first permanent capital, known for its UNESCO World Heritage temples and friendly free-roaming deer. Visit Todai-ji Temple, home to the Great Buddha (Daibutsu)—one of the largest bronze statues in the world. Continue to Osaka, Japan’s vibrant culinary capital. Enjoy dinner in Dotonbori, the city’s neon-lit entertainment district, where takoyaki and okonomiyaki await.
Sunday, May 16 – Osaka: Culture and Farewell
Spend your final full day exploring Osaka Castle, an iconic fortress surrounded by landscaped parkland and cherry trees. Visit nearby museums or markets, and soak in the city’s warm, energetic spirit. In the evening, gather for a farewell dinner celebrating your shared journey and the friendships formed across Japan.
